The Morris Avenue Community has a strong sense of place and is in desperate need of a new community center. This opportunity to provide the community with a new library, that will also serve the needs of a gathering place, gallery, cafe and auditorium, will help the community grow.
The design of the community library strictly relied on two principles: the sense of place and the sense of ecology. The sense of place provided the library with proportions and design decisions which reveal themselves in the facade as well as the plan. The sense of ecology reveals itself in the section. Through the use of a sawtooth roof, staggered levels, an intensive green roof and bioswale, and geothermal technology, the building is able to be almost completely net-zero.
